CHAPTER TWENTY
âWe talked about that,â Edna said, laughing as she climbed into the passenger seat. âSoldiers donât scream like a girl.â
I glared at her. âSoldiers donât ambush their friends.â
âExactly. You were lurking outside the diner for no good reason. Gertie and I decided to beat you at your own game.â
âI was onlyââ
âOh, we know what you were doing,â Edna said. âYou had a moony look that said you were talking to Chief Fiancé about things unrelated to the current case.â
Keats grumbled agreement. The conversation with Kellan had been a few beats too long for the dog, too.
âWeâre right, arenât we, Chief?â Gertie asked, from the back seat.
âBye, ladies,â he said, and disconnected quickly.
âHas to have the last word, doesnât he?â Edna said. âA word he knows we dislike almost as much as âold.ââ
âKellan and I talked about the current cases,â I said, pulling an illegal U-turn on the main drag. âPlural. If youâd care to apologize, I might fill you in on the other one.â
Edna pulled off her helmet and patted her curls. âDo we really need to know? Apologies are hard to come by in my world.â
âIâm sorry, Ivy,â Gertie said. âI shouldnât have let Edna talk me into it.â
Turning in her seat, Edna scowled. âNice try. This one was your idea and Iâm not going to squander an apology when Ivy had no business wasting our time. Weâve been wearing out boot leather for hours looking for her canine niece.â
âNiece? Well, I guess thatâs as good a term as any,â I said, pushing the pedal down. âWe can forfeit the apology just this once.â
âCan we forfeit the velocity?â Gertie said. âNormally I enjoy a thrill ride but the onion rings I ate at the Busy Bee are arguing with my gall bladder.â
âYou still have yours?â Edna asked, patting her abdomen. âThat was the first thing to go for me. Left more room for my lungs to expand.â
I waited for them to simmer down then shared Kellanâs news about the grave theyâd happened upon that morning. The excitement level in the truck soared. They high-fived each other with gloved hands.
âSee, Ivy?â Edna said. âWe struck gold and you doubted.â
Gertie leaned between the seats. âIâd hardly call a Thistledown deadbeat gold, old friend. We can do better.â
âJust a beginning,â Edna said. âI wish I didnât have to hang up my dowsing rod for winter. The chief is going to want us on retainer.â
I let them bask in their success because they deserved a moment of glory. These two were always on the move, learning new skills and defying all expectations for people of their generationâespecially women. On top of that, they had spent the day combing the bush for my dogâs sister and would continue in the morning without a complaint.
Well, there would be complaints but mostly for dramatic effect.
âHow does the discovery of the Bibb body connect with the missing dog?â Gertie asked, as I pulled into the Gentry driveway.
âWeâve got all night to speculate,â I said. âMaud insisted we stay here and given whatâs happened, it seems like a good idea.
